Seller FAQ

DCRParts does not endorse, verify, guarantee, nor otherwise take any responsibility for buyers here.  Please use appropiate caution and for incoming checks or money orders, wait as least 10 business days for clearance!  For paypal, accept only payments from verified buyers and ship only to verified addresses.

What is DCRParts.com's purpose?

DCRParts was created to help those who want to repair, refurbish, or expand the functionality of old industrial (business) electronics.  It is also intended to help people who posses this old equipment or parts to sell it instead of throwing it away.

What types of For Sale ads may be placed on DCRParts.com?

1) Ads to sell or buy obsolete, unsupported, or orphaned electronic equipment and its parts, accessories, and manuals.  This electronic equipment can be any type that is commonly used in a business environment, such as: test equipment, manufacturing equipment, servers, printers, security systems, and industrial controls.
2) Repair services for old electronic equipment.

3) Ads to sell or buy obsolete electronic or electromechanical parts (PLDs, EPROMs, Displays, etc.)

Why should I place an ad here, instead of on ebay?

Ebay's business model is based on fees for advertising, such as ad posting fees, final value fees, extra image fees, extended auction fees, store fees, etc.  Our revenue comes from repairing and selling equipment, which we've been doing for years at www.dotcomrecycling.com. We don't need to make money off of your ads.  So when you post your old, obscure equipment here, you won't have to auction it off at fire-sale prices or constantly have to pay re-posting fees.

What's the relationship of Dotcomrecycling.com and DCRParts.com?

www.dotcomrecycling.com was and still is our original advertising site, founded in 2001.  To create that Web site, we just wrote some scripts to paste data from our inventory control system onto a static Web site.  It's effective, but highly user-unfriendly and difficult to expand.  In 2008, we "discovered" this excellent Drupal GPL software.  It's still in rapid development, but also has many exciting features that work well.  So we used it to create www.dcrparts.com as a shared website.  It's unlikely we'll ever get all the items from Dotcomrecycling.com copied over here.  We'll just focus on the equipment that could use this Website's description flexibility.

How much does it cost to place an ad here?

It's completely free.

Why would DCRParts make this service available without charging a fee?

It's better for you, but we figure it's better for us, too.  We think of it this way:
1) Larger malls get a lot more visitors than smaller malls, because customers feel like they'll be able to find what they want.  In the same way, buyers will come here more often if they think they can find what they need.
2) There's such a wide range of old equipment out there, that there won't be too much overlap between ads.
3) When highly skilled people can find the old parts they need, they're more likely to develop an expertise in repairing certain pieces of equipment.  Then they'll buy some parts from all of us.
4) We'll probably be the first to see and buy some of the items posted here.  We're always searching google and ebay to find parts anyway.

So what's the catch?

Not much.  Someday, we may put google ads on this Website.  We don't think this will cause people to buy from the google ads instead of the ads on DCRParts.com, because we are in a different niche of the market.  If someone is searching calibrated equipment with a service contract, like those found on google ads, they probably aren't going to buy from any of us anyway.

Writing Your Ad

Why is placing an ad so... complicated?

Most ads, when placed properly, will automatically target two types of buyers.  Therefore it is important to fill in the as fields as accurately as possible.  However, you can correct or adjust your ads at any time. The two target audiences are:

  1. Buyers who are looking for modules, accessories, repair parts, manuals, etc. for a specific piece of equipment they already own.
  2. Buyers browsing the catalog looking for a class of equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes) or component (e.g. obsolete EPROM chips.)

What is a 'Dealer Price'?

A Dealer Price is an optional lower selling price you can put in your for sale ad.  This price will only be visible to people registered with DCRParts.com as equipment dealers.

Why would I want to put a Dealer Price on my ad?

If you're selling something obscure that you would like to get rid of as soon as possible, a good Dealer Price may trigger an equipment dealer to purchase your item for inventory.  Dealers generally are not going to buy something for the price they can sell it at, unless they really, really need it to make a sale.  You might even think of the Dealer Price as your real selling price, and the higher regular price as the amount you'll get if you're lucky enough to find an end-user.

How do you determine who is a dealer?

We ask those who wish to be registered as dealers, and therefore able to see Dealer Prices, to verify their identity by adding a link from their dealer website.  We then manually check these links to make sure they sell related electronic equipment.

Do I have to honor my Dealer Price if I believe the buyer is not a legitimate dealer?

No, definitely not.  Please email us and we will try to help verify someone's status.
